Ayurveda, an ancient medicinal form, traces its origin from India during the Vedic times some 5000 years back. This word is derived from the word Ayus means “longevity or life” and veda means “knowledge or science”. Therefore Ayurveda is considered as “science of life” and is mentioned in one of the oldest philosophical texts of the world –the Rig Veda. The verses of Rig Veda refers to panchmahabhut and considers three major forces Air, Fire and Water as the basic principles of ayurveda.
Ayurveda has always worked to make mankind realize his own self and his potential through physomatic integration. The natural medicine provides a comprehensive health care. It deals with physical as well as mental and spiritual health. An interesting fact associated with it is it uses all methods of healing like yoga, aromatherapy, meditation, herbs, diet, surgery etc.
Around 1500 BC, this science was classified in two schools. One is Atreya (the school of physicians) and other is Dhanvantari (the school of surgeons). Dhanvantari is considered as the reincarnation of lord Vishnu from the Hindu tradition and is world’s first surgeon. He further developed this science by preparing various herbal based cures and natural remedies. It was because of this delineation that two very ancient books on ayurveda were written, Charaka Samhita and Susruta Samhita.
Charaka Samhita written by sage charaka explains the logic and philosophy on which this system is based. This is based on Atreya, the school of physicians. It describes the treatments based on internal and external applications. It is written in Sanskrit in verses form. While Susruta Samhita written by saint sushrut. It follows school of surgery and gives knowledge about treatments through prosthetic or cosmetic surgery.
This science deals with the concept that body is made up of five elements i.e. Earth, Water, Fire, Air and space. During the treatment a person’s mental, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects are taken into consideration. Along with the treatment of the diseases ayurveda focuses on complete development of a person to make his life happy and healthy throughout. To have the best results, its dosage should be taken on time with all the precautions suggested to you. Its medicines are organic, self grown and hand made available in the form of powders, tablets, oils and decoctions which are prepared from the extracts of plants, herbs and minerals.
Since its origin, Ayurvedic treatment has given recognition to India. Various centers are there throughout the country to give effective ayurvedic treatment. Here over 100 colleges are established that provides a degree in ayurvedic medicine. Kerala, renowned as Holy Land of Ayurveda, has become the hub for such treatment and thus attracts tourists worldwide giving a boon to tourism industry. Tourists gain a soothing effect on their body and soul.
The art of this treatment to strike a balance among the body, mind and soul gives it an edge over the other healing systems. It’s the earliest, effective and safest medical practice in the world today.
